What there is, is a best fit for a Michigan garage that sees hard freeze-thaw cycling, road salt all winter, humidity in summer, and often cold install conditions. This guide gives you the honest version: what holds up here, what doesn't, and how to match a system to your actual slab instead of a brochure.
What Michigan actually throws at a garage floor
Before picking a coating, be clear about the conditions it has to survive around Frankenmuth and mid-Michigan:

Full polyaspartic system
The premium choice. Fast curing even in cold, UV-stable, excellent chemical and salt resistance, and often back in service within a day. If you need a quick turnaround, you're installing in winter, or the floor gets a lot of sun, this is the strongest performer. The trade-off is cost, and it demands an experienced installer because the working time is short. For many homeowners the flake-base-plus-polyaspartic-topcoat version delivers most of these benefits at a friendlier price.
Epoxy with a polyaspartic topcoat
Our default recommendation for a typical Michigan garage. The epoxy or flake base builds thickness, hides slab imperfections, and gives you the color and flake look. The polyaspartic topcoat adds the UV stability, abrasion resistance, and salt and chemical resistance that plain epoxy lacks, and it speeds up the return to service. Balanced on cost, looks, and climate performance. This is the workhorse.
Standard epoxy alone
The budget option, and fine in the right situation: a sheltered, shaded, temperature-controlled garage where you're not in a rush. But used alone in a cold or sunny Michigan garage it shows its weaknesses fast, slow or failed cold cure, yellowing under UV, and less salt resistance. Polished concrete
Not a coating, but a genuine contender for the right space. Your slab is ground, densified, and sealed, so there's no film to peel or pick up on tires. It's tough, low-maintenance, and immune to the cold-cure problem. The catches: it only looks as good as your existing slab, it doesn't add color or flake, and its salt resistance depends on keeping the sealer up. Excellent for a sound slab and an industrial look, less ideal for an older rough residential garage.
The part most guides skip: it's the slab, not the coating
Here's the honest truth that matters more than which product you pick. The best coating in the world fails on a bad slab. If your concrete is holding moisture, cracked, spalling, or contaminated with old oil and salt, the failure comes from underneath no matter what goes on top. So the real order of operations is:
1. Test the slab for moisture. A high reading changes the whole spec. 2. Repair cracks, spalling, and joints. Don't coat over active damage. 3. Prep mechanically. Diamond grind or shot blast so the coating bonds. 4. Then choose the coating system that fits the conditions and your use.

When a coating isn't the right call at all
If your slab is badly deteriorated, heaving, or structurally failing, no coating fixes that, and we'll tell you so.
